- From 1938, local Civil Defence admin, including the AFS, was based at The Limes. Their equipment was kept at the former tram depot near the Leopard pub on Dudley Road. When county fire brigades took over in 1948, a substation was created at The Limes, using the house's garage or its site, while a retained fireman lived in the adjoining cottage, once servant's accommodation. The Limes became offices (Sedgley UDC, then Dudley MBC from 1966), and outbuildings replaced the substation site, which have now in turn been replaced by a new house (2013). The house was sold by Dudley MBC in 1970.
Fire Brigade's air raid shelter was located in cellars below part of the main house.
Fire Cover 204, page 16
- has Sedgley listed as F3 in 1974, so 1972 closure date may be incorrect |
